Why suffering, grief and pain?
Our divine CORE or center, is both a literal and metaphorical concept. It represents the centre of the self and the body. As the center of the self, we see it as the “Center Of Right Energy” (CORE)—a repository of wisdom, intuition, creativity, happiness, endless joy, and the answers to all questions about our growth and development.
At the level of the body, the Core Space is the area where unimpeded pulsation occurs, where the system is “unarmored.” From this space, energy naturally expands outward into the rest of the body and beyond, connecting us to the world. This space is also linked to the universal energy field through the chakra system, which is often associated with the endocrine system, the viscera, the autonomic nervous system, and the nerve plexuses of the gut—open and complex systems that integrate our being.
Living fully from our CORE (synonymous with Heart, Essence, or the most vital part of ourselves) is a journey. It challenges us to:
Satisfy our basic needs: To grow, develop, and mature.
- Integrate and unify polarities: To harmonize genetic, neurological, sensory-motor, behavioral, and symbolic dialectics.
- Expand consciousness: To discover the meaning of our lives.
- • Develop our “Pilot”: To better coordinate our feelings, thoughts, decisions, and actions.
- Validate and cultivate our uniqueness and potentiality: To embrace our individuality and purpose.
When life becomes blocked—whether through obstruction, suppression, or rejection—our natural energy flow and consciousness become compromised. These disruptions may lead to:
- Chronic sympathetic activation: a heightened state of fight-or-flight readiness.
- Parasympathetic “dorsal vagal” responses: causing shutdown, withdrawal, and immobilization.
- Loss of “ventral vagal” social engagement: limiting our capacity to connect with others in a nuanced, meaningful way.
These “Life Blocks,” “Energy Blocks,” or “Consciousness Blocks” contribute to defensive armoring and dysfunctional behavioral, psychological, and emotional patterns. Wilhelm Reich referred to these patterns as Character Structures, including:
- Submission and dependency: Pseudo-solutions for Love, which should be our natural state of being.
- Aggression and control: Distorted expressions of Power, driven by the fight for self-preservation.
- Detachment and withdrawal: Substitutes and hollow imitations of Serenity.
These pseudo-solutions, while adaptive at first, inevitably lead to grief, pain, loneliness, emptiness, dissatisfaction, and alienation. They cultivate negative belief systems, emotional unease, and “vagal dilemmas”—conflicted responses within the nervous system. Common indicators include:
- A lack of comfort, satisfaction, and ease in life.
- Limited self-soothing and emotional regulation abilities.
- Difficulty managing arousal and nervous system states.
- A dominance of sympathetic nervous system activation.
Core Strokes™ provides a transformative path for understanding and resolving these pseudo-solutions. Using a combination of verbal and non-verbal techniques, as well as hands-on and hands-off interventions, Core Strokes™ facilitates recognition, release, and transformation.
Each “Stroke” acts as a “unit of recognition”, helping individuals connect with and dissolve these blocks. This process enables individuals to return to their Center Of Right Energy (CORE), restoring flow, balance, and vitality, and empowering them to live fully from their true essence.
Would you like to learn and experience how to break free from pain, grief, and “vagal dilemmas”?
The Core Strokes training addresses these profound questions and topics through a unique integration of body-mind practices, therapeutic tools, and experiential learning:
• “Bodying” Practices: The body is a sensorium and the ultimate source of knowledge. Philosophers like Merleau-Ponty, Schmitz, and Apel have shown that cognition, insight, awareness, and consciousness are impossible without the body. Touch serves as a vital bridge for body-mind integration, connecting deeply with our lived experiences.
• Shape and Countershape: This approach explores our innate drive to seek completion and wholeness. By working with interactional responses, we address the satisfaction of basic needs, emotional acceptance, validation of power and activity, as well as receptivity and reactivity.
• Maps of Personality and Consciousness: Drawing from the Pathwork of Self-Transformation, Core Energetics, and Jack W. Painter’s natural breath cycle, we integrate attachment and developmental theory, affective and interpersonal neurobiology, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and body-mind integration—including character analysis and deep bodywork.
• Economy of Strokes and Stroking Profiles: Inspired by Dr. Eric Berne’s Transactional Analysis, we explore different types of strokes: positive, negative, conditional, unconditional, verbal, non-verbal, internal, external, for being, doing, or having. This creates a framework for meaningful interaction and connection.
• Somatic and Formative Psychology Platform: This includes fascia-focused movement and structural bodywork that supports psychological goals. Body armor is viewed as a tissue-based manifestation of adaptive behaviors, explored through fascial restrictions and atrophy. Principles of tensegrity, as life’s primary organizing tool, guide the design of organic structures. Techniques like myofascial strokes and Postural Integration® are applied to address “natural types” of character.
• Energy and Consciousness: By examining the client’s present consciousness as a reflection of past experiences, we assess unmet genetic expectations. This work enables clients to move energy, make empowered choices, and develop the “Ego-Pilot” to navigate life with greater autonomy.
• Body Awareness, Energy, and Breath Work: Based on Dr. Jack Painter’s map of natural energy flow, we address energy blockages through therapeutic touch, connection, and contact. Techniques like mirroring, neurostimulation, and modulation enhance pulsation in the body and personality, fostering a realistic self-image through interoception, proprioception, and emotional conceptualization.
• Gestalt “Here and Now” Approach: Using Gestalt Dialogues, we connect authentically with others as they truly are, while also revealing and expressing our true selves. This approach employs imagined “playing out,” ideal figures for mirroring, and making interior dramas visible through triangle and constellation work.
• Identifying Emotional Substructures: Understanding the root of our emotional drives (from the Latin e-movere, meaning “to move”), we explore meaning and contact. This process leads to realizing genetic potential, achieving pleasure, and ultimately returning to harmony with the universe.
• Healing Trauma and Survival Stress: We address protection and defense mechanisms across the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. By regulating the nervous system, we move from dorsal vagal activation (freeze, threat) to ventral vagal engagement (safety, connection). Using hands-on bodywork and hands-off verbal guidance, we identify and release blocks at physical, energetic, and emotional levels, creating new symbolic antidotes. This fosters greater self-regulation, full self-expression, and freedom from survival stress.
Why Core Strokes™?
Core Strokes™ was developed by Dirk Marivoet after 35 years of practice and teaching in the fields of body psychotherapy, integrative experiential and myofascial bodywork, psychomotor therapy, and Core Energetics. With over 40 years of professional experience, Dirk has synthesized insights from multiple approaches, including Core Energetics® (John C. Pierrakos, MD), Bodymind Integration (Postural Integration®, Energetic Integration®, Pelvic-Heart Integration®, developed by Jack W. Painter, PhD), and the Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor (Albert Pesso and Diane Boyden-Pesso).
Core Strokes™ is designed to unlock the hidden potentials of the bodymind, addressing the evolutionary process of the living soul. By integrating the body, emotions, mind, will, and spiritual dimensions into a cohesive whole, it provides powerful tools for making profound and authentic contact with the self. The method also focuses on restoring and promoting energy balance and equilibrium within the personality, supporting personal growth and transformation.

How does this Method work?
Core Strokes™ sessions help individuals develop awareness and consciousness, enabling them to release outdated survival patterns stored as “myofascial and muscular armoring”—an integral part of our emotional defense system. This process facilitates a freer flow of energy and greater consciousness. Muscular and myofascial armoring often manifests as soft tissue hypertension or hypotension, movement impairments, emotional rigidity, difficulties in connecting with others, and diminished “aliveness.”
Because armoring is a chronic, unconscious, and involuntary pattern of muscular and myofascial constriction, it cannot be released through sheer willpower alone. In Core Strokes™ sessions, individuals are gently guided to let go of these deeply ingrained defense patterns through relational and experiential work. Within a safe and supportive environment, clients are invited to uncover, explore, and express new or previously hidden parts of themselves—parts that often manifest as physical symptoms or blockages in the body.
Core Strokes™ employs a meta-view, incorporating a map of consciousness and a map of personality, to provide orientation and determine the direction and depth of the transformational work. In one-on-one sessions, the therapist’s presence offers the client the courage and support needed to reveal, become conscious of, purify, and transform what surfaces from their inner depths.

The common thread through the week was a sense of allowing ourselves increasingly to be our fullest self, and to let the body (our own body) show us where current or past experiences are holding us back. It was deeply moving to see others (and myself too) tackle particularly painful holding patterns, and to see the joy, the lightness of being, the fresh energy that came available upon re-emerging from the intensive work. Marcel van Rootselaar, New York
My deepest gratitude to Dirk as my trainer, supervisor, therapist for continuing inspiration, support, wisdom and heartfelt qualities. He really «walks what he talks». A wonderful human heart which can make space for everything.
